The Nikolaikirche has stood at the highest point of the Freienwalder Marktplatz since the first third of the 13th century. It is a late Gothic brick building, in which the remains of a previous field stone were included. These remains, consisting of regularly hewn stone blocks, are mainly found on the west and north walls.
The conversion of the field stone hall into a representative Gothic brick church began with the addition of the choir polygon. An inscription, no longer visible today, indicated that it was completed in 1453. At the same time as the choir was added, the walls of the nave were raised with brickwork and the beautiful west gable adorned with blinds was added. The old south wall made of field stone was completely replaced in brick, with individual field stones being reused.
It was not until 1518 and 1522 that the tower was added to the southwest corner of the nave. The lower part consists of regularly hewn field stones, above of brick. The first floor has four panels each, the second four windows each. To the east, the tower is adjoined by a two-bay, cross-rib vaulted aisle, which was later increased by a gallery. Lightning strikes led to tower fires in 1584 and 1637, after which the tower was repaired with a modified upper part. After the lightning strike in 1867, the fire could only be prevented from spreading to the nave through the courageous efforts of the Wriezen volunteer fire brigade. In the same year the tower was given the shape that still shapes the cityscape today.
In 1998, his crowning crown, which was in danger of falling, had to be taken down. No documents or other additions were found in the tower ball. In June 2001, the new 8-meter high crown, built by the Angermünder metal restorer Wilfried Schwuchow, was put back on the top of the tower.
