The Wesenitz flows here in the valley:

The Wesenitz rises in the Hohwald, part of the Lusatian mountains, at an altitude of 515 m on the Valtenberg from the mouth of the Valentin Erbstollen, an old mine.

It flows through Neukirch, Bischofswerda, near Stolpen and passes the Lausitzer fault near Dürrröhrsdorf at the so-called Teufelskanzel, where it enters the Elbe sandstone. Here it flows through the Liebethaler Grund. It flows into the Elbe in the Pratzschwitz district of Pirna. The preglacial Wesenitz may have had its course in Oberneukirch to the east through the Wilthe valley basin into the Spree, moraines and gravel masses at the north foot of the Dahrener Berg therefore ensured the course to the west today.

With a length of 83.6 kilometers, the Wesenitz is one of the longer right-hand tributaries of the Elbe.

Before 1727, the Wesenitz was crossed below the castle by means of a ford and a sheep track. The old wooden bridge had to be declared dilapidated in 1762 after a flood.

The bridge in its current form was built from 1766 onwards. However, after the flood of 1804, it was in such a desolate state that only pedestrians and horse riders were allowed to cross on foot.

Due to the poor construction, in which the spaces between the outer walls of the bridge were only filled with loose rubble, it could not withstand the flash floods in 1766. During the subsequent renovation, the bridge arch was protected against ice drift and flooding by sandstone walls in the river bed.

During the Second World War, blasting chambers were built into the bridge arch on the Mühlsdorf side. But peace came to Lohmen and Mühlsdorf before the front! So the bridge was preserved in its historical architectural style.

The bridge had to be completely renovated again in 1995, under strict conditions of monument protection. It was opened to public traffic on September 15, 1995.
