In the distance, slightly to the left of the cathedral, in the middle of the small broad area, you can see Gull Island. It is also called Seagull Mountain or, in Danish, Mågeøen, and is only 3-5 meters high.

It is a bird sanctuary. It is monitored and maintained by the so-called Seagull King. Around 1115, there was also a castle on the island, from which some bricks and other remnants were washed away during the great flood of 2023.

Schleswig ([ˈʃleːsvɪç], Low German: Sleswig, Danish: Slesvig, Anglo-Danish: Sljasvig[2]) is a medium-sized town in Schleswig-Holstein at the end of the long Schlei fjord in the Baltic Sea. It is the district town of the Schleswig-Flensburg district, the former capital of the Duchy of Schleswig, and is also known as the judicial capital of the state, as it is – for historical reasons – the seat of the State Constitutional Court, as well as three other higher courts and the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The urban area of Schleswig is located at the western end of the Schlei, which extends far into the interior. West of the Kleine Breite, it lies largely on the northern shore of the Baltic Sea estuary, in the area of the transition between the Schleswig-Holstein Hills and the Schleswig Geest.

The urban area encompasses natural elevations ranging from 0 to 55.6 m above sea level. Only the landfill on the northern edge of the district has more exposed elevations of up to 62 m. Northwest of the city lie the Tiergarten and Pöhler Gehege forest areas. In the northern part of the city lies the Brautsee lake. Also within the urban area is Seagull Island (Danish: Mågeøen) (officially: Möwenberg), located in the middle of the Schlei basin.

According to one view, the town's name originates from Old Norse and means "bay of the Schlei" or "harbor on the Schlei."[4] According to another view, the name originates from Old Saxon and Old Frankish, meaning "Schlei settlement" or "Schlei trading place." Sliasthorp and Sliaswich were already the Old Saxon and Old Frankish names for Haithabu.
