Since 2005, the center of the Neuwerkgarten has again been adorned with a new globe house, in which a replica of the famous Gottorf giant globe can be seen. The old globe house, once known as Friedrichsburg, was a multi-storey pavilion in what was then the idea of the “Persian style”. This was a reference to the hoped-for trade relations with the Orient, which could be planned but not realized.
At that time, the globe was considered a kind of eighth wonder of the world; a large, walkable sphere with the known parts of the world on the outer shell and the sky inside. The virtual “Welt- und Himmelstheater” came into the possession of Peter the Great in 1714, and in 1941 it was seized by art protection officers of the Wehrmacht in the palace district in front of Leningrad and brought to Germany. In 1946 it was returned to the Soviets as spoils of war.

The re-erection of the replica of the Hercules Group in the summer of 1997 in the middle of the Hercules pond excavated two years earlier was the first highlight of the conservation efforts.

The 300 or so rubble of the Hercules group on the bottom of the pond, partly cyclopean shape and size, partly crumbled and barely identifiable, could be recovered, poured and put together in 1994 using archaeological methods.

In the baroque garden of Gottorf Castle near the Hercules pond there is a sculpture by the sculptor Johannes Brus made of polyester, which is coated with rubber. A bright elephant head balances over the concrete base, appears weightless and almost seems to float. The omission of the massive body of the animal and the concentration on the head area underline the unusual shape, which puts a smile on the face of many visitors. It almost looks as if the animal is wearing an invisibility cloak that covers the heavy body. Due to the cracked and furrowed surface, the lifelike representation has a very lively effect.

It was Duke Friedrich III who, starting in 1637, had a magnificent garden laid out around 800 meters from the castle island, where the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum Schloss Gottorf is located today.

Historically, it is referred to as the "new work". This is also where the name of the street Neuwerk very close to the castle comes from. At that time, the baroque garden was the first Italian-style terraced garden in all of Central Europe.

The garden, which the then court gardener Johannes Clodius was commissioned to design, initially consisted only of the Hercules pond, in the center of which stood an octagonal pavilion. In addition, there was a slightly higher garden terrace.

In 2005 the garden was restored according to historical plans and descriptions and since then it has been very popular with all visitors who enjoy the colorful blossoms and beautiful atmosphere in the green.

The baroque garden of Gottorf Castle can also be explored with an audio guide. Over 18 stations, every visitor is guaranteed to get a green thumb when they learn something about the creation of the garden, the moving history and the planting.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the baroque garden. Even the bike has to stay outside. Nevertheless, you can take a nice break at the lake and let one or the other view wander.
