The builder was a former citizen of Staffelstein. He was expelled from there because of his Protestant faith and settled here. Such immigrants were called exiles. The house was built in 1623, largely destroyed in the town fire of 1632 and rebuilt in 1685.

The Exulantenhaus (Exile House) at Salzmarkt 12 is a historic half-timbered house. Exulanten were displaced persons, see the next tip.

During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), many Franconian residents immigrated from Upper and Lower Austria. The term exile has become commonplace for them. In the old church records they are also referred to as “Ländler”, people from the country “ob der Enns”. After the Thirty Years' War, the exiles made up between 25% and 50% of the population in many places in Upper and Middle Franconia. The total number of exiles can be estimated with certainty at more than 100,000. An incredibly large number for that time.
