The Donkere Poort is the only visible remnant of the Hof ten Walle, initially a motte that was expanded into a fortified castle. It was located on a domain that had already been loaned in 1604 by Count Boudewijn V of Flanders. When the Gravensteen was no longer adequate as a residence for the counts, they moved to Hof ten Walle at the beginning of the 14th century. Halfway through that century, the castle came into the hands of Lodewijk van Male, Count of Flanders, who had it renovated and expanded, including a moat and a wall around it.

In the past, you could enter the forecourt through the "Dark Gate", the northern outer gate of the castle. The lower part of the gate still largely contains the original masonry, the floor above it dates from the 19th century and then served as a residence for the adjacent former cotton mill. Under the Dark Gate you can read on the walls the names of people who were executed because of their beliefs (Protestants) or simply on the orders of Emperor Charles V. (source: reisroutes.be)
