The Western Cemetery, with its 23 hectares and 30,000 graves, is the largest in Ghent. It is less well-known than Campo Santo, despite the often equally monumental graves and famous Ghent residents such as Cyriel Buysse and Virginie Loveling who rest there.

Mayor Charles de Kerchove de Denterghem decided in 1862 that Jews and Protestants could also be buried in the Western Cemetery. This was met with fierce resistance from the diocese, which refused to consecrate the cemetery for a long time. This controversy earned it its nickname 'geuzenkerkhof'.

The cemetery is the resting place of some 200 Belgian soldiers who died in both world wars. There is also a British military cemetery here with almost 200 dead from both wars and the grave of a Dutch soldier from the Second World War. In addition, there are a few dozen French, Italian and Russian soldiers from the First World War. Of the 23 hectares, almost half of the cemetery consists of grass strips and greenery. That makes the Western Cemetery an ideal place for a nice walk.
