Vrijdagmarkt, place where vibrant and commercial life comes together at the feet of Jacob van Artevelde.
Friday is the perfect day to discover the city of the Noose Bearers.
The working week is almost over and the weekend is just around the corner.
Noose carriers (nickname of Ghent residents) are about to go into weekend mode.
Here we are, neatly dressed in a suit and with a perfectly knotted tie around our neck.
We start our historic 'Fantasiereycke' walk at the feet of Jacob van Artevelde on the Vrijdagmarkt. Greet the 'Wise Man' on his pedestal and humbly look for the Lower Scheldt. Centuries-old facades, shrouded in the shade of the spring sun, still exude history today. On the shore, King Willem I (King of the United Netherlands 1815 – 1830) stares at his reflection in the Lower Scheldt. His faded glory days are visible like a ripple in the murky water. The center/old town of Ghent is beautiful. Take enough time to see this series of highlights.
You can easily spend the whole day here.
For example, by strolling through the city on foot or taking a boat across the canal.
You can of course do this by bike, but it can be a hindrance in some places due to the number of visitors.
