The prisoners in Husum-Schwesing came from 13 nations. Some were active in the resistance in their country during the German occupation. Others were arrested because they tried to escape forced labor in Germany. The largest group of prisoners came from the Netherlands. 588 men alone came from the village of Putten, from where the SS deported them to the Neuengamme concentration camp on October 1, 1944 as part of a "retaliation action."

Since 2001/2002, 300 steles have commemorated the camp inmates who were killed. The steles symbolize people standing hunched over in a humble posture and, in their scattered distribution, are a reminder of the arbitrary violence against the prisoners. They are made of a steel that quickly rusts, so it is difficult to decipher the names of the deceased. This is a reminder that it is always difficult to keep the memory of the time and the crimes of National Socialism alive. The installation was designed by Ulrich Lindow.
