The statue of John Cockerill stands proudly on the Luxembourg Square. The British-Belgian steelmaker John Cockerill (1790-1840) can be considered the founder of the Belgian steel industry. Among other things, he had the rails and parts of the locomotives that were used for the first train route between Brussels and Mechelen (1835) manufactured in the blast furnaces and steel factories in Seraing. There is already a statue in honour of Cockerill there. In 1872, an almost copy was unveiled on this spot, the Luxembourg Square. The statue shows the man himself with four workers at his feet. Normally, the statue would have been placed on the Avenue Louise,
