The two very different names Broodhuis (Dutch for bread house) and Maison du Roi (French for house of the king) come from two different buildings with different functions. In Dutch, the name of a medieval predecessor building from the 13th century has been preserved, a wooden building in which the city's bakers sold their bread. When the Duchy of Brabant fell to the Habsburgs, the house housed the ducal, later royal, court and thus became the Maison du Roi. In 1515 it was replaced by a stone house. The place of execution was located directly in front of the building.

After the destruction in 1695, several successor buildings were built here. The current building is in the neo-Gothic or neo-Renaissance style, the façade is based on engravings from the period between 1515 and 1536 and is reminiscent of the Oudenaarde town hall. In 1873 the city commissioned the architect Victor Jamaer to restore the façade; The work was completed in 1896. In addition to the historical views, the architect also created an originally planned arcade and expanded the building with other typical recreations from the 16th century.

The most important work of art in the collection is undoubtedly the building that houses the museum.

This neo-Gothic building, called Maison du Roi in French and Broodhuis in Dutch, dates from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Its unique history reflects that of the city.

But why does it have two different names?

Broodhuis in Dutch refers to the oldest history of the place. In the thirteenth century, a bread market stood on the central market square of Brussels, today's Grand Place. The French name, Maison du Roi, refers to the title of the building's later owners: the Dukes of Brabant. In the early sixteenth century, the lord of this place was none other than Charles V, "King" of Spain. Both on the facade and inside the building, there are several references to the emperor: his statue, centrally located on the front facade, welcomes visitors, and the stained-glass windows in the stairwell recall the territories he ruled.

About the building: The height of the King's House is 20.21 m. With the central tower, this is 38.49 m. For comparison, the Town Hall with its tower is 96 m high.
