"The Rheinhausen-Bergheim water tower is about 36 m above sea level. Due to its exposed location and its structural fabric, the building has established itself as a landmark of Duisburg-Rheinhausen to this day.

The 7-storey tower is 50 m high and is crowned by a spherical container made by the Dortmund steel construction company Klönne, which was initially taken over by Thyssen in 1966 and eventually merged with ThyssenKrupp. The capacity of the water tank is over 3,000 cubic meters. The associated round pump house in brick construction, which is equipped with two pumps, is also located on the site. In the middle of the 20th century, the annual maximum output reached more than 4 million cubic meters per year, not least due to the consumption of the smelting works. In 1996 the pumps were switched off.

The construction of the Hochemmerich waterworks corresponded to a forward-looking plan at the beginning of the 20th century. Industrialization was long in full swing in 1908, but it had picked up speed again with the establishment of the Krupp steelworks in Rheinhausen in 1897. The operation of the new Diergardt colliery strengthened the boom since 1912. The locally triggered infrastructural development and urban densification of various settlement centers (here: Hochemmerich, among others) then led to the later town of Rheinhausen (1934). The supply of water was a crucial issue in industrialization, among other things due to water pollution. In its bad times, the Emscher was called "Köttelbecke" (Boldt / Gelhar 2008: p. 108 ff.). "
