Walking along the River Leie in Ghent, sitting on a restaurant terrace or simply lingering on the shore has a special charm. There is a lot to see here!

The Leie (French Lys, Latin Legia) is a river that runs in France and Belgium. It rises in the municipality of Lisbourg (Flemish: Liegesboort), in the French department of Pas-de-Calais, generally drained in a northeasterly direction and flows for a total of 202 kilometers in the city of Ghent, in the Belgian province of East Flanders, as the left tributary of the Scheldt.

These two waterfront promenades stretch between Michael's Bridge and Gravensteen Castle. They are among the most beautiful in Belgium. The port of Ghent used to be here. Larger ships could sail up to here via the Leie. Old houses are located on both sides of the Leie, which were first renovated for the 1913 World Exhibition.

Ships have moored here since the 11th century. And how could it be otherwise? It's like the songs from the Lorelei. In Ghent, the beauty of the Graslei brings everything and everyone to a standstill. Where the beautiful facades are reflected in the Leie. Both tourists and residents can relax on both sides of the river. With your legs over the quay. Or with your legs under a patio table.

It would make you lyrical! But it is the pride of every Ghent resident. And you have to go there when you visit Ghent. You are close by from the Korenmarkt. Walk across the water onto the Grass Bridge and feast your eyes! By the way, boats still moor at the quay. And the great thing is that you can now also embark yourself! Feel free to immerse yourself in the history of Ghent.

The houses along the waterfront breathe history. You can now find accessories in the Cooremetershuys. But in the Middle Ages, the appointed grain meter measured the traded grain. Also take a close look at the completely restored facade of the Guild House of the Free Skippers. A lot of money has been invested in this building over the centuries, and it shows! The stately stepped gable facade of the old grain store has been there since the 13th century.

The grain store - also known as' t spijker - has now been given a completely new interpretation. More than grist to the mill for gourmets! But of course it doesn't have to be that extensive. You can also visit an attractive brasserie on the Graslei and Korenlei. Or just get some finger food and put yourself on the quay! Romance is all about simplicity, right?

Let yourself be seduced by the many terraces. What could be better than enjoying an aperitif along the water? Indeed. Enjoy one more! When the sun is out, it really is a place to linger. Nicely enclosed between the old facades. Enjoy the first warmth on a spring day.

Together with day tourists and the Middle Ages in the picture.
A prime location to capture a beautiful memory. The lower Graslei beckons. Like many sunbathers, we settle down on the banks of the Leie. In our own fantasy, sounds of 2.0 activities and bustling city life, we make a remake of medieval city life in our minds. Wonderful… Dreaming about the Counts of Flanders, the 16th century Spanish rule, Charles V, the persecution of the noose-bearers…
Finally, the 'Dulle Griet' (Big Gun) wakes us up from our power nap.
As proud Flemish people, we look up to the residence of the Counts of Flanders, the 'Gravensteen'. Click, click, click…
For almost 1000 years, the mythical moated castle has determined the behavior and awe of every passer-by.
The ringing signal of a tram takes us back to the present…
I could go on writing… Time to wrap up our Ghent experience.
Triggered? More tastemakers can be found in the many created highlights or in the city walks offered by Komoot.
Go, discover and experience colorful Ghent.

The Graslei is a street in the historical centre of the Belgian city of Ghent. The Graslei forms the quay on the right bank of the Leie. The quay and street on the left bank is the Korenlei. It is located between the Grasbrug and Sint-Michielsbrug.
From the 11th century onwards, trading activities along these quays grew and this became the city's harbour. The St. Michael's Church and St. Nicholas' Church were built on both sides of the Leie near this harbour. Because of the city's grain staple right, all grain imports into the County of Flanders were done via Ghent and the Graslei and Korenlei, together with the Korenmarkt, became the centre of the grain trade in Flanders.
The current buildings are still a remnant from that time, although various buildings were adapted in the 18th and 19th centuries. The façades were thoroughly restored for the 1913 World Exhibition in Ghent. The cityscape of the Gras- and Korenlei was protected as a landscape in 1952 and in 1994 both quays, their surroundings and the adjacent buildings were also protected as a cityscape.
