The ringing of the town church of St. Michael in Jena consists of five bells. They were cast in 1947 by the bell foundry in Apolda. With the sound pattern based on the Parsifal motif e-g-a-c by Richard Wagner, the bells announce the central message of salvation of the Christian faith. It symbolizes communion. (Wikipedia)

The late-Gothic hall church with impressive facade and western tower houses inside a Gothic stone pulpit, of which Martin Luther preached, as well as the original grave plate of the reformer.

The Protestant town church of St. Michael Jena is one of the largest late Gothic religious buildings in Thuringia. The hall church was built from 1380 and was completed in the 16th century. 80 meters high is the church tower, which can be climbed. The vaulted passage under the altar is a very rare church architectural feature. It is 3.5 meters high and 3 meters wide and was the only access to the 1301 founded behind the church Cistercian monastery. Known as Ara, she is one of the seven wonders of Jena. The wooden sculpture of the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city and the church, dates from the first half of the 13th century. Martin Luther preached from the stone pulpit in 1524 and 1529. The original bronze grave stone for the Reformer was by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. The Weimarer donated it to the university in 1571. In Wittenberg there is a second casting. Impressive is also the vault of the church with beautiful ray stars. In 1945 the church was heavily destroyed. The elaborate exterior renovation was completed in 2012.

This Jena church is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword or lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.
