JenTower with observation deck

The landmark in the heart of the city was created as a new research building for the VEB Carl Zeiss Jena according to the plans of the East German star architect Hermann Henselmann in the cylindrical construction of an eyepiece.

Until the renovation in 1999/2001, the tower was used by the University of Jena. Today, its observation deck (open daily) at a height of 128 meters offers an overwhelming view.

Built in the early '70s as a Zeiss research center, the tower was used by the university until the mid-1990s. Currently it serves as an office tower and is probably the most characteristic feature of the Jena architectural landscape. At 159 m, it is also considered the highest tower in the new federal states.

With 144.5 m height (with antenna tip 159.60 m) is the former "Uniturm" (or "biscuit role"), the highest office building in the new federal states after official height (without technical setups).

The emergence of the building was planned-politically motivated. In the 1960s, the Council of Ministers of the GDR decided to accelerate the construction and redesign of important cities in the country. So-called "city dominants" should give historic city centers a new, "socialist" appearance and tower above all other buildings, especially the church towers.

An urban legend that surrounds the building is the plan of a twin tower identical in construction, which will be connected to the existing tower by a bridge and thus represent a pair of binoculars as a symbol of the optical device construction strongly represented in the city of Jena.
