Ernst Karl Abbe (January 23, 1840 – January 14, 1905) was a German physicist and professor at the University of Jena. He was born in Eisenach and died in Jena. This attractive memorial commemorates his work and achievements. Abbe is best known for his work in the field of optics. He constructed the first refractometer, which he described in a pamphlet published in 1874. He discovered Abbe's number, a measure of the change in the refractive index of a transparent material with wavelength. Already a professor at Jena, he was hired by Carl Zeiss to improve the manufacturing process for optical instruments, which at the time was largely based on trial and error. During their long and fruitful collaboration, Abbe established the mathematical foundations for the design of microscopes, which were crucial to the later dominance of the Zeiss company.

A pavilion in the heart of the city: The historic Ernst Abbe Memorial commemorates a significant figure in the Saale city. Ernst Abbe is certainly one of Jena's greatest figures. He was a physicist, inventor, entrepreneur, and social reformer: Henry van de Velde designed and erected this monumental memorial pavilion in 1909/1911 in honor of Ernst Abbe. It is truly a work of art of European stature. The pavilion's interior houses bronze reliefs by Constantin Emile Meunier and a marble herm by Max Klinger with a portrait bust of the former co-founder of the Zeiss factory. The eight-sided, temple-like central structure has a monumental effect. Constructed of limestone, with four portals and bronze folding doors, an inlaid floor, and a skylight dome in a reinforced concrete structure, the memorial dominates the square named after Abbe's colleague, Carl Zeiss. The costs for the construction and artistic furnishing of the memorial hall were primarily covered by donations from the people of Jena.
