Forte Verena was an Italian fortress built between 1910 and 1914 to defend the Italian border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire at an altitude of 2,019 meters on the top of the homonymous mountain. The fort is located in the municipal territory of Roana, and faces with sheer walls the underlying Val d'Assa.

You can get there by following the CAI 820 path which winds through woods, large pastures and walls overlooking the Val d'Assa. Fort Verena is a First World War fort that dominates the entire Asiago plateau

An Italian World War I fort, nicknamed "the Dominator of the Plateau" due to its central location at an altitude of 2,015 meters. From here, at 4:00 a.m. on May 24, 1915, the first Italian cannon shot was fired, officially marking the entry of the Kingdom of Italy into the war. It seemed impregnable and unassailable given its location, but on June 12, a large Austro-Hungarian delayed-fire shell penetrated the fortress, gutting its main structure and killing 49 men. This coup de grace revealed the structural weakness of the fortifications designed and built in the first decade of the 20th century, which were already inadequate to withstand the new, increasingly powerful artillery. This marked the end of the brief phase of the war of the forts and the beginning of trench warfare.

It's a shame that the ski facilities, the refuge/restaurant/bar, and the general festival partially ruin its charm, especially on summer and winter weekends.
