The Eurasian lynx or northern lynx (Latin Lynx lynx) is a species of lynx found in Eurasia. In German, "lynx" almost always refers to this species. After the brown bear, wolf and Persian leopard, this cat is the fourth largest land predator native to Europe.

The Eurasian lynx has been heavily persecuted for centuries, and systematic attempts to eradicate it began in Europe in the late Middle Ages.[1] After the species had largely disappeared from Western and Central Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, it migrated back from neighboring settlement areas from around 1950 and was also deliberately resettled. Today, lynxes inhabit the Alps, the Jura, the Vosges, the Palatinate Forest, the Harz Mountains, the Fichtel Mountains, the Bavarian Forest, the Bohemian Forest and the Spessart[2]. In Germany, the lynx is still considered highly endangered according to the Red List of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation
