Ter Dolen Castle is best known for its brewery and café in the front buildings. However, Ter Dolen, in Houthalen-Helchteren, is a protected landscape where the surrounding oak avenues, stream valleys, forests and castle park are also worth a visit. In addition, there is an avenue restoration project in Ter Dolen. The biodiversity and oak trees in the domain are receiving extra attention since it was established in the summer of 2022 that there are no less than ten (10) different species of bats on the castle grounds. In addition, Ter Dolen is home to the largest population of grey long-eared bats in Limburg. This large - rare - colony was found in the attic of the castle.

Kasteel Brouwerij Ter Dolen is open all year round except during the end of the year. During the winter, it is also cozy with the fireplace. During the summer, the terrace is a magnet for walkers (walks start there), cyclists (it is located on routes), and other recreationists, also because of the playground for the youngest. Castle Ter Dolen (also called Den Dool or De Dool dates in its current version from the sixteenth century. But the castle was already mentioned in 1282. It served, among other things, as a country estate and summer residence of the abbot of Sint-Truiden.

The first mention of De Dool Castle dates back to 1282. At that time it was owned by the Abbey of Sint-Truiden and was used by the abbot as a country house, guest house or refuge during the wars of the people of Liège. During a dispute over the ownership of the castle it was burned down in 1361 by knight Hendrik van Halbeek. In 1522 a major restoration followed by abbot Willem van Brussel. Around 1840 the castle domain got its current shape with some unique tree species. During both world wars it was briefly occupied by the Germans who caused destruction and set fires. For years the castle was uninhabited and in disrepair, until in 1990 the domain was bought by a brewer's daughter. She started to renovate the complex and since 1994 the brewery 'Ter Dolen' has been established here. Various abbey beers are brewed in the modern castle brewery.
