    Ferdinand Traugott Flinsch introduced mechanical papermaking in Blankenberg in 1843. Parchment paper and printing paper were still produced in this Thuringian town on the Saale River until 1993. Today, you can learn more about that era in a museum.

    As soon as you cross the bridge over the Saale River, you leave Thuringia and enter Bavaria on the other bank.

        The Saalebrücke at the Blankenberger Papierfabrik, built in the 19th century for city traffic and the rail operation of the works railway, was destroyed in 1945 by the German Wehrmacht. The wooden structure for agricultural vehicles was destroyed by the GDR authorities in 1952. It was only in 1992 that this important pedestrian bridge in the Green Belt was rebuilt and completely renovated in 2009.

          The Saale bridge at the Blankenberger paper mill was built in the 19th century and destroyed by the German armed forces in the last days of the war in 1945. It was not until 1992 that the bridge was made usable for pedestrians and cyclists, partly with the original steel construction, and it was only in 2009 that it was prepared and renovated as we know it today.
