The bridge was opened in 1950 and connects the Duisburg districts Rheinhausen and Hochfeld at the level of the Rheinpark. It was named "Bridge of Solidarity" on January 20, 1988 during the month-long protests against the closure of the Krupp steelworks in Rheinhausen, when 50,000 workers from 60 huts demonstrated on the bridge.

In 1987, the workforce of the steelworks in Duisburg-Rheinhausen began the fight against its closure. The population showed great solidarity with the workers. In December 1987 they occupied the Rhine bridge in Duisburg together. A month later, workers from all over Germany put up the “Bridge of Solidarity” sign.
The Bridge of Solidarity is the longest tied arch bridge in Germany and leads over the Rhine from Duisburg-Hochfeld to Duisburg-Rheinhausen.
