"In 1884, the spirits producer Gottfried Maurer bought a house on the then flies square in Graz. During his travels to Northern Germany and Belgium, the capable businessman got to know carillon and had one built into his Graz house. On Christmas Eve 1905, the melodies of 24 bells rang out for the first time In 1929, Maurer bequeathed the glockenspiel to the city of Graz with the condition that it should continue to operate. The bells only fell silent in World War II. They were used in the arms industry and were only replaced in 1956. And so the Graz glockenspiel plays three melodies three times a day. But not always the same. The 800 steel pins on the mechanical play drum can be moved. "

The Graz glockenspiel plays three melodies three times a day. But not always the same. The 800 steel pins on the mechanical drum can be moved. New tunes can be heard five times a year. Alpine songs and yodels alternate with Christmas carols and pleasing melodies by contemporary composers - there are around 70 songs to choose from. The arcade windows in the gable open to show a dancing Styrian couple. As a crowing conclusion to the performance, the golden rooster flaps its wings. Gottfried Maurer, who built the glockenspiel, copied it from Munich City Hall.
