Having reached the lowest point of the Schlossberg complex, I hiked down Hainbuchenallee to descend into the city. Ideas for greening the Schloßberg came up soon after the French had withdrawn, as it was no longer possible to rebuild the fortress. Based on the annual ring count, the age of the hornbeam is estimated at around 200 years. So this avenue dates from the first planting campaign around 1818. Source: umdiewelt.de/t9752_6

A species-rich mixed deciduous forest of common beech, hornbeam, ash, elm, and several maple species, with introduced species such as black locust and tree of heaven also growing in sunny locations. The unusually lush growth of ivy, which climbs numerous tree trunks and also colonizes rocky areas, gives the Schloßberg forests a natural, unspoiled appearance. Among the landscaped areas of the Schloßberg, mention should be made of the Dr. Karl Böhm Avenue with its Japanese ornamental cherry trees and the nearby hornbeam avenue, a fig tree beneath the clock tower, magnificently flowering broom bushes at the Herberstein Bastion, and an impressive bluebell tree at the Kanonenbastion.

Approximately 50 bird species have been observed, including a dozen breeding species such as the tawny owl, kestrel, and collared flycatcher. Until the 16th century, the Northern Bald Ibis bred in the area of today's Schloßbergsteig. Badgers and, occasionally, foxes also inhabit Graz's Schloßberg.[40]
