The numerically strongest Memmingen guild built one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in the city here. Memmingen's woven goods were a top export for centuries due to their good quality. As in many places, Memmingen's weaving trade became impoverished over time.

In the 12th century, the southern wall of the Welf city ran along the Weinmarkt. During excavations in 2005, wooden remains of the former city fortifications were found there. It was not until after 1350 - at that time the former upper town was included in the city fortifications - that the old parts of the city fortifications were demolished. The square was probably rebuilt before 1400. Even earlier, wines from all parts of the then known world were offered for sale there. The square developed into a center of trade and industry in the 15th century, when almost all guilds settled here. The most impressive are the weavers' guild with its decorative half-timbering and the grocers' guild, in which Europe's first human rights (the so-called Twelve Articles of Peasants) were written down. The Freedom Fountain in front of the Grocers' Guild, inaugurated in 2014, is intended to commemorate this memorable event. The former Knörringer wine house was to be demolished. This was prevented at the instigation of the citizens of Memmingen. The building was restored and has been used as a café, restaurant and for residential purposes since 2008.
