A very beautiful, inviting market square. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the white town hall and the red Grand Guild building next to it.

The Grand Guild is a building in the former Free Imperial City of Memmingen in Upper Swabia. It closes off the market square to the east, thereby creating a strong urban design aspect.
The Grand Guild included the patricians, who formed their own guild, or more precisely, patrician society, after the Guild Revolution in 1347. Due to the wealth they brought to the city, they were the most powerful guild in the former Free Imperial City. The Small Council, also known as the Privy Council or Hare Council, was introduced into the city by Emperor Charles V in 1551. It consolidated the patricians' already existing dominance in political affairs by ensuring that the patrician class always constituted the majority. They determined the political, cultural, and economic direction the city would take. After the mediatization of the Imperial City, the Noble Society of the Golden Lion lost its dominance.
The first drinking establishment for wealthy Memmingen merchants was built on this site in 1453, after the patricians had founded their own guild, the Grand Guild, following the Guild Revolution of 1347. It had to make way for the new building between 1718 and 1719. The building served as a meeting and ballroom for the patricians and nobles of the city and the surrounding area. After the city became part of Bavaria in 1804 and the resulting dissolution of the guilds, the Golden Lion Society was also dissolved. In 1834, the city acquired the building and housed various offices and authorities there. Around 1950, the building housed the City Museum; today, it houses the passport office, the immigration office, the residents' registration office, and the registry office. Weddings are performed in the neighboring Memmingen Town Hall.
The building is two stories high, with the third story already located in the sloping roof, featuring three dormer windows with curved Renaissance gables. Large, white-painted blocks extend from the middle, largest dormer window to the ground. The same white stones are placed at the corners. The entrance is slightly raised and reached via three steps. It is flanked by two imitation columns. The door is made of stained oak, with lion heads as knockers. The first floor is painted gray and has grooves. The second floor is painted red. In the center is a richly decorated balcony with a lion depicted at its center. The wrought iron parts are gilded.

The old market places used to be the center of the cities. The guilds brought prosperity to the cities. This is where life took place.👍
