The nature conservation station Zippendorf is located on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin, opposite the islands of Rabbit Werder and Ziegelwerder. It was formerly a municipal institution and was taken over in the spring of 2002 by a sponsoring association. This is composed of the nature conservation associations NABU and BUND and the zoo Schwerin, the national association of beekeepers e. V., the Foundation for Environmental Protection and Nature Conservation Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and committed citizens of Schwerin.

One of the focal points of Zippendorf nature conservation station is the environmental education work with children in day care centers, schools and hoarding, as well as the care and landscape management on the islands rabbit and brick Werder in cooperation with the city of Schwerin. The permanent exhibition "Lebensraum Schweriner See" offers insights into life on and around Lake Schwerin. In addition to sea dwellers, current results of the urban project "SeeNaTour" Schwerin are on display.
