This magnificent jewel is located directly on Lake Schwerin. Schwerin Castle is certainly one of the most beautiful in Germany. I couldn't decide which side is the prettiest. Whether at sunset from the lake side or with the beautifully landscaped castle park in the foreground. After the walk, you can also visit the fairytale castle from the inside as part of a guided tour.

I think Schwerin Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Germany. A castle tour costs € 8.50 for adults and you have to pay an additional € 2 if you want to take photos in the castle (tripods and flashes are not allowed). But the castle is also very beautiful from the outside and the pretty castle park is ideal for walks or to linger there and enjoy the day. Unfortunately, smaller areas (like the entrance area) were still scaffolded when I was there (on August 25, 2019), but renovating such a large castle takes time. Most of the areas of the castle have now been completely renovated and now shine in new splendor, e.g. the sight of the castle from the freshly renovated inner courtyard of the castle is very nice. I live about 100 km from Schwerin, but I will definitely come back often, because for me as a hobby photographer (nature, landscape, animals, architecture) the Schwerin Castle is a wonderful photo opportunity!

Children especially enjoy the game of hide and seek between the individual pillars. But be careful: the lake ripples right into the cave and if you are not careful, your feet will get wet. If you want to avoid this, you can climb the grotto on the roof. From up there there is a wonderful view over the lake to the Marstall and the castle garden. Benches invite you to take a break in this special roof garden.
The huge chunks that make up the grotto come from the area around Raben Steinfeld. This place in the east of the state capital is also located on Lake Schwerin. The granite boulders were transported to the bank via a stone slide on the steep bank, which is still visible today, loaded onto barges and shuttled to the castle island.
The inhabitants of the grotto are also interesting. Bats such as the noctule bat or the water bat are among the tenants and float silently on the hunt for insects at dusk. If you are very calm in the stone vault, you can hear the winged mammals whisper softly even during the day. Even the mouse-eared bat and the pond bat, two endangered species, have already been detected at Schwerin Castle.

The 19th century saw the Gothic as the ideal of church building. The castle church therefore received its extension, even if it did not fit in with a Lutheran chapel in terms of content. Thanks to the extension, the sacred space inside the palace has also been clearly visible from the outside since the 19th century.
Particularly beautiful and eerie: the gargoyles in the form of grotesque creatures from hell, which are part of the filigree Gothic ornamentation. The colorful glass windows of the choir were created by Ernst Gillmeister from Schwerin.
