Saint Helena, to whom this church (next to Saint Andrew) is consecrated, was the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (who recognized Christianity as a religion after his victory at the “Milvian Bridge” in front of Rome and the long period of persecution with the "Edict of Tolerance" of Milan ended). In the early fourth century she went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics from there to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. It is therefore often represented with a cross as an attribute. The feast day of Saint Helena in the saints calendar is August 18th.

The neo-Gothic church with its separate bell tower in the castle park exerted a magical attraction on me. Unfortunately it wasn't open. If it is, go inside.

The small Catholic community of court musicians (from all over Europe) received its own church on the "Church Island" from Duke Friedrich Franz I in 1803. Dedicated to the memory of St. Helena (mother of Constantine) and his daughter-in-law Helena Paulovna who died in 1803. Inaugurated in 1809, this first neo-Gothic church building triggered the neo-Gothic wave.
