The lake was artificially created at the turn of the 20th century to drain the formerly swampy area. It is one of the four lakes (Hubertussee, Herthasee, Dianasee and Koenigssee) within the glacial channel of the Grunewald chain of lakes and is elongated in shape, with an area of around 22,000 m². The lake is fed mainly by groundwater. In addition, there is rainwater that falls on the lakes and the adjacent road area. It is directly connected to the Dianasee to the southwest via a channel that is spanned by the listed Hasensprung Bridge. In the northeast, after around 400 meters of built-up area, the Halensee follows, and a pipeline ensures the water supply from the Koenigssee. The body of water represents a junction within the Grunewald chain of lakes, as another lake, the Herthasee, is connected to the chain perpendicular to the southeast. This is the last lake to the west and belongs to the secondary channel that runs eastwards over the Hubertussee, Fennsee and Volkspark Wilmersdorf to Schöneberg Town Hall. At the Koenigssee, this smaller glacial drainage channel originally flowed into the large Grunewaldrinne. A canal under the Koenigsallee Bridge connects the Koenigssee with the Herthasee.
