The large "gas boiler", which can be seen from afar, also dates from this construction period. The first natural gas came to Augsburg in 1962. The conversion of the entire gas network and customers from town gas to the new natural gas will take until 1978. From then on, the gas works was only used for the distribution and storage of natural gas.
In 2001 the plant was completely shut down. The whole complex with the courtyard-like buildings and the gas tanks is now a listed building on the list of monuments.

When in 1907 the city of Augsburg took over the privately operated gas supply from 1848 with the two old gas works, these "gas factories" were already quite old and at their production limits.

Therefore, from 1910, a new, larger gas works outside the city was built by civil engineer Dr. E. Schilling and the architects, Gebrüder Rank. From 1915, the then very modern plant was producing town gas from hard coal. The gasworks survived the Second World War almost undamaged. With the construction of a large chamber furnace in the 1950s, the gasworks even turned into a real gas coking plant. The gas produced in Augsburg was even transported to Kaufbeuren via a gas pipeline.
