Augsburg is a county-wide city in southwestern Bavaria. The university city is the seat of the government of Swabia and the seat of the district of Swabia and the district office Augsburg. Augsburg became a city in 1909, with a population of 100,000, and today, with around 288,631 inhabitants, is the third largest city in Bavaria after the city of Munich and Nuremberg. The agglomeration of Augsburg is also in third place in terms of population and economic power in Bavaria and is part of the overarching planning region Augsburg, in which about 885,000 people live.

The name of the city goes back to the Roman army camp and the later Roman provincial capital Augusta Vindelicorum (also Augusta Vindelicum), the 15 BC. Was founded as Castra under the Roman Emperor Augustus. This makes the Fuggerstadt one of the oldest cities in Germany.

Augsburg is the only German city with its own public holiday, the Augsburg High Peace Festival, which is celebrated every year on 8 August.
