The Fuggerei in Augsburg is the oldest existing social settlement in the world. Jakob Fugger "the rich" donated the row house settlement in 1521. Today 150 needy Catholic citizens of Augsburg live in the 140 apartments of the 67 houses for an annual rent of 0.88 euros and they are supposed to have a Lord's Prayer, a Creed and an Ave Maria every day speak for the founder and the Fugger family.

The picturesque settlement has its roots in the 16th century and dates back to a foundation by the famous merchant Jakob Fugger.

The oldest social housing estate in the world, which still exists today, was founded in 1521 by Jakob Fugger for innocently impoverished citizens of Augsburg and was built between 1514 and 1523. It consists of 67 houses with 140 apartments, a church and administrative buildings. The annual rent is still only 0.88 euros (previously one Rhenish guilder). Three prayers a day for the soul of the founding family are part of the rental agreement.

The Fuggerei is known as a "city within a city" because it has a church, a city wall and three gates. To this day, the social housing estate is financed almost exclusively from the foundation's assets (forestry and real estate) and is managed by the Princely and Countly Fugger Foundation Administration.
