          The Schiffergesellschaft Lübeck was founded on December 26, 1401 as St. Nicholas Brotherhood. The purpose of this association is to be found in the following statement from the founding deed: "For the help and comfort of the living and the dead and of all who seek their honest support in navigation." As almost all the religious brotherhoods dissolved in the course of the Reformation, united the St. Nicholas Brotherhood with the St. Anne Brotherhood. It was called the Schipper Selschup and acquired in 1535 for 940 Lübische Mark a built in the 13th century house on the corner of Breite Straße / Engelsgrube across from the Lübeck Jakobikirche.

          Despite the Reformation, the religious affiliation of the Brotherhood was not lost. In the newly acquired house there were kept colossal statues of St. Nicholas and Anna himself. For the elderly and the needy one provides food and living space.

          The rooms of the former official and meeting house of boatmen and sailmakers are today mostly used as a restaurant and are leased by the Schiffergesellschaft.

          However, the association of boaters themselves, which receives only captains from the Lübeck area with the patent for Great Ride, but has retained their charitable goals.

          The lease income is used according to the statutes for the support of needy boatmen and boaters widows and for the care of the listed building. Thus, the needy get rent-free apartments and by paying a so-called "tobacco money" an old-age allowance.

                    Since the founding of the Schiffergesellschaft a lot of time has passed. In over 500 years city and house have experienced a lot. Lübeck remained neutral in the 30-year war, founded the modern merchant shipping, survived the 7-year war, benefited from the Continental War, but was then under French rule, survived another war and was finally destroyed in World War II quite extensive.

                    The great hall has remained almost unchanged over the centuries. Other rooms, such as the captain's room or the two rooms Hanseatic room and captain's salon, have carried the tradition comfortably through time.

                    One thing has not changed in all these centuries: the boatmen's society is a meeting place. Business people, companies, lovers and of course people who are interested in the history of the house meet here. An evening in the Schiffergesellschaft should always be an evening among people. The tradition that keeps sailor society above everything else is that of being together and of society.
                    After the renovation in 2015, a lot has changed, the house is as busy as it has not been for a long time and every year something new develops in the Schiffergesellschaft. "Tradition is not to stop", is the guiding principle for the historic ambience. In other words: "Today is the good old time we are looking for in 10 years."
