This peculiar building is the pillory of Lübeck, called Kaak in Low German, from the Middle Ages. Parts of this building are of Gothic origin. Buildings on the Lübeck market have been given this name since the 13th century.
The market has been rebuilt several times, the first Kaak has been known since 1294. It stood on the west side of the market. In 1465 reports were made of a conversion and renovation. The upper floor, the Finkenbauer, was placed on a butter shack with a cellar. The butter shop was to house twelve stalls.
In the 1950s, the Kohlmarkt was redesigned, the market was made smaller, but the entire area was widened by twelve meters and parking spaces were created. The Kaak was dismantled in 1952 by decision of the city council; the components were stored.
Some people from Lübeck then got together in the 1970s, founded the association “Reconstruction of the Lübeck Kaak” and made suggestions. A “sophisticated standing beer hall” or a “historic bratwurst stand” could be imagined.
In any case, 200,000 marks were collected in donations, 80,000 marks were added from public funds and the reconstruction could begin. The preserved Gothic components were rebuilt north of the last location. The Finkenbauer was placed on an open hall made of six concrete and 16 wooden stands. The upper floor received a metal roof, the Finkenbauer was covered with tiles. It took several months until the Kaak could be officially handed over to the city. That happened in May 1987.
