Interesting market square with many nearby sights (Pranger, town hall, Niederegger, St. Mary's Church, etc.).
Weekly market days and the annual Christmas market are held on the square.

"Buildings on the Lübeck market have been referred to as the Kaak since the 13th century, and today they are considered to be parts of Gothic origin in Lübeck." The Kaak, a medieval court bower and pillory, was demolished and stored after the war in 1952; rebuilt slightly to the north using old components. A beautiful market square that, when there are no market stalls, gives you a full view of the beautiful old town hall, especially from a distance. Very impressive. I really like Lübeck. I will definitely come back. There is still so much to discover here. 😃

"Earlier Count Adolf von Schauenburg recognized the favorable transport situation of the merchant settlement, which was located on an almost completely surrounded by water peninsula between Trave and Wakenitz. In 1143, he founded Lübeck and gave the settlement the city law, thus laying the foundation for the later success of the city as "Queen of the Hanseatic League." The long-distance trade was ultimately the crucial point that should lead to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck should be for about 100 years, the most important trading city in the Baltic Sea region.
The imperial freedom of 1226 gave Lübeck the possibility of a strong and independent trade policy. The law developed in the city became effective as an ordinary law in around 120 Baltic cities. With its port as "gateway to the Baltic Sea" Lübeck gained more and more importance in trade with the Baltic Sea residents. In a long process, the Hanseatic League emerged from the common commercial policy of Low German merchants. Over the centuries, more and more cities joined the Confederation: in the 15th century, around 70 cities actively participated in Hanseatic politics by visiting the Hanseatic Days, and merchants from more than 100 cities used the privileges of the Hanseatic League abroad. Lübeck, located in the middle of the Hanseatic cities, occupied a predominant position and became the "head of the Hanseatic League".
The end of the Hanseatic League began with the discovery of the sea route to India and the silver and gold reserves of America: the creation of the Atlantic economy in which the big money was made. England and Holland strengthened. Increasingly, they handled the Baltic trade with their own ships, so that the Hanseatic merchants lost importance. The Hanseatic privileges were lost and more and more cities were forced to quit under pressure from their rulers or voluntarily turned their backs on him.
The city survived the Thirty Years War and Napoleon Bonaparte. And despite all the defeats and setbacks, the city recovered and flourished again. It was not until 1937 that Lübeck lost its state independence and was integrated into the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein by the National Socialists with the "Hamburg Act".
Due to the Second World War, large parts of the old town were destroyed on Palm Sunday 1942. But Lübeck also recovered from this. "Source: luebeck.de/tourismus/sightseeing/geschichte

The market, located in the middle of Lübeck's old town and "at the feet" of the town hall, is the first place in the Hanseatic city.

Excavations in the late 1990s revealed seven layers from different periods, indicating that the market was in continuous use. Roman ceramics were also found hidden in shafts. It is believed that these could be offerings from prehistoric times.

The "Long House" of the Lübeck town hall was built between 1298 and 1308 as an extension of the main building to accommodate the former, later known as the Löwensaal, ballroom on the upper floor. The east facade was faced again in 1875. The goldsmiths' stalls were located under the arcades until 1868.

Wonderful romantic Christmas market embedded in the old town of Lübeck.
The huts are very well set up and offer a Christmassy flair for young and old.
The diversity offers its special charm, on the delightful market square, in front of the imposing town hall, the snack and mulled wine stalls, in front of the church the contemplative medieval market, plus the nice fairy tale forest and the glittering and fragrant stalls, in atmospheric decoration (light chains, pyramid, ferris wheel , decorated fir trees, etc.).
Here you can get into the Christmas mood and enjoy the anticipation of Advent and Christmas.

The town hall is a beautiful ensemble from the weddings of the Hanseatic League. One sees the city hall the power, which possessed Luebeck at this time. Here you will also find the Niederegger Café. Nice atmosphere to enjoy the marzipan treats.

The Lübeck town hall is located in the heart of the old town and is one of the most famous brick Gothic buildings. With its impressive facade, it resembles a fairytale castle. Architectural fashions and styles from three centuries have shaped the current shape of the building: since 1226, components have been added again and again, conversions and expansions have taken place, such as the addition of the sandstone arbor, the elevation of the display wall with its striking wind holes as well as the bay window and the imposing grand staircase. The Hansesaal, in which the Hanseatic Days were once held, and the Danzelhus, in which people celebrated and danced extensively, have disappeared over the centuries. Much is still preserved, however, and a guided tour of the town hall will reveal the full beauty of the historic gem.
Even today, at the age of almost 800 years, the town hall still fulfills its role as the administrative seat and meeting place for the citizens of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

This peculiar building is the pillory of Lübeck, called Kaak in Low German, from the Middle Ages. Parts of this building are of Gothic origin. Buildings on the Lübeck market have been given this name since the 13th century.
The market has been rebuilt several times, the first Kaak has been known since 1294. It stood on the west side of the market. In 1465 reports were made of a conversion and renovation. The upper floor, the Finkenbauer, was placed on a butter shack with a cellar. The butter shop was to house twelve stalls.
In the 1950s, the Kohlmarkt was redesigned, the market was made smaller, but the entire area was widened by twelve meters and parking spaces were created. The Kaak was dismantled in 1952 by decision of the city council; the components were stored.
Some people from Lübeck then got together in the 1970s, founded the association “Reconstruction of the Lübeck Kaak” and made suggestions. A “sophisticated standing beer hall” or a “historic bratwurst stand” could be imagined.
In any case, 200,000 marks were collected in donations, 80,000 marks were added from public funds and the reconstruction could begin. The preserved Gothic components were rebuilt north of the last location. The Finkenbauer was placed on an open hall made of six concrete and 16 wooden stands. The upper floor received a metal roof, the Finkenbauer was covered with tiles. It took several months until the Kaak could be officially handed over to the city. That happened in May 1987.

Construction of Lübeck's town hall began in 1230, shortly after the granting of imperial freedom, and over the years it has been repeatedly modified and expanded.
This explains the different architectural styles and parts. It was completed in 1308.
Today it still fulfils its function as the seat of the administration, meeting place of the citizens
and their committees as well as the Senate.

With its large display wall, the small decorative balconies and the three towers,
the exterior of the town hall attracts all eyes. The various contemporary styles are also combined on the inside.

The Hanseatic Hall of Lübeck's town hall, where the Hanseatic Days used to take place, was lost at the beginning of the 19th century due to renovations in the town hall.

On the way to the Citizens' Hall, above the open staircase, there are three colossal paintings depicting the appointment of the first Lübeck Council by Henry the Lion, the awarding of the Barbarossa Privilege in 1188 and the construction of the cathedral by Henry the Lion.
