Since 2016, the Maulohe has been part of the EU's Lower Alliediederung and FFH area. The river course and the regularly flooded lowlands with their meadows, reed beds and old waters are food and habitat for endangered species such as e.g. the otter, the quail king or the skylark. In the event of flooding in the winter half-year, Nordic swans and geese as well as lapwings and other meadow bird species are regular guests.

At the same time, the area is also a popular recreation and dog walking area close to the city. For those seeking relaxation, there is a circular path along the Aller and through the meadows.

In accordance with the requirements of the Protected Area Ordinance, dogs must be kept on a leash on the paths all year round. So that the four-legged friends can still let off steam, the Verden district has declared a three-hectare meadow area in the south of the Maulohe as a dog off-leash area. Here, dogs are allowed to run and play off a leash outside of the breeding and breeding season, i.e. between July 16th and March 31st. For better orientation in the area, the dog off-leash zone is marked by a row of posts in the area.
