Many restaurants in the pedestrian zone, but still a limited selection: they are almost only Italian. But almost all of them also have outside catering.

Verden is located in the Middle Weser region on the Aller river, immediately before it flows into the Weser. As a center of horse breeding and equestrian sport, it is nicknamed the “Equestrian City”.
Another famous building in Verden is the Verden Cathedral. It was consecrated in 1490.

In 2007 the council decided on the integrated growth and development concept for the inner city. An urban planning competition was held in 2009 for the area along the Aller and the Nordertor.

The legal basis for the construction of the Allerpark is the development plan B 96 I, legally binding since September 2, 2011.

There are no extremes, that's what Verden is all about. A city in constant development. But never hectic. With foresight and a sense of proportion. Not too big. Not too small. You meet. You know each other. People still chat with each other. Despite being close to the big city, it has retained its very own character. This is reflected in the citizens' commitment to, for example, cathedral festivals, jazz and blues stages and the cathedral music that is known beyond Verden.

Verden was first mentioned in a document by Charlemagne, under the name "Ferdi in Saxonia," in roughly its current form.

The city name "Verden" contains the word "furt" (fort)—meaning a river crossing. Since prehistoric times, traders have used this convenient crossing over the Aller River as a crossroads for long-distance routes from east to west and south to north.

In 782, the so-called "Verden Blood Court" took place in the Verden area during the Saxon Wars. Charlemagne had 4,500 Saxons executed. The Diocese of Verden was established around 850.

Until the Reformation in the 16th century, the influence of the Verden bishops extended far into the Altmark region. Separated from the bishopric, the merchant settlement of the "Norderstadt" (Northern Town) around the present-day town hall developed into an independent town with its own city rights. Verden later even became a free imperial city. The Süderstadt (Southern Town), with its cathedral, was the spiritual center.

It wasn't until after the Thirty Years' War in 1648 that the Swedish queen united the two districts against the will of the Verden population. In the following centuries, Verden, as a garrison town, frequently had to submit to foreign powers. The kingdoms of Sweden, Denmark, France, Hanover, and finally Prussia left their mark on the city.

In the 19th century, Verden developed into a judicial and administrative center. Since the 1930s, the city of Verden (Aller) has adorned itself with the nickname "Equestrian City." This term is brought to life through national and international equestrian events, as well as breeding events and auctions. The German Horse Museum is also located in Verden.
