Anyone approaching Verden from the water will be rewarded with an idyllic panoramic view of the 1,000-year-old city. Horses graze peacefully on the Allerwiesen, the imposing Verden Cathedral - St. Maria and Cecilia towers over the pretty half-timbered houses. The charming cathedral and equestrian town lies on the banks of the Aller River. It is known for its picturesque landscapes, rich history and vibrant cultural scene.

Verden is THE German equestrian town. Even if the name "Verden" is not derived from horses - the equestrian town was already an important center for the horse trade in the Middle Ages. Horses were bred, trained and traded in the markets of Verden, which brought the city prosperity and prestige.

Verden only received the nickname "equestrian town" in 1930 and still deserves it today, as it is known for its horse breeding and is an important location for equestrian sports thanks to the stadium with attached horse racing track and the Niedersachsenhalle. Top-class equestrian competitions and auctions attract horse lovers from all over the world. The love for horses is also lived out and is visible everywhere. Lovingly designed horse motifs can be found throughout the city. The renowned German Horse Museum is entirely dedicated to the history, culture and importance of the horse.

The Mittelweser region offers the best conditions for a holiday at the riding stables. There are well-signposted bridle paths around Verden that lead through picturesque landscapes and along the Aller. Riding stables and riding schools in the area offer lessons and rides.

The heart of Verden is undoubtedly the imposing Verden Cathedral - St. Mary and Cecilia. The impressive architectural masterpiece in Romanesque and Gothic styles houses valuable works of art. Narrow alleys, cobbled streets and picturesque half-timbered houses – on a stroll through the old town you will immerse yourself in the historic past of the cathedral city of Verden.
