The Schalkenmehrerener Maar is the southernmost and largest of the three Dauner Maars. There is another dry maar to the east of the Maarsee. It is one of the rare double maars and is only around 10,000 years old. There is a very beautiful circular path around the maar. To the south is the village of Schalkmehren with places to stop for refreshments.

It belongs to the Dauner Maaren (or to the Dauner (Maar) group) and is a Doppelmaar, consisting of the western Maarsee and the eastern Trockenmaar. Both were created about 10,500 years ago after a volcanic steam explosion. The lake in the western part of the Maars varies in diameter between 500 and 575 m and is up to 21 m deep. The height of the maares is 420.8 m above sea level. NHN [1] (mean water level). It fills the younger of the two Maarkessel. The eastern part of the Maars is occupied by a moor.
