    10 good reasons to visit Krems
    Krems on the Danube - our home town. With almost 25,000 inhabitants, it is the fifth largest city in Lower Austria. In terms of age, there would already be over 1,000 candles burning on a birthday cake. There is a document from the year 995 that mentions a castle called "Chremisa", making Krems the oldest city in Lower Austria.
    Today, Krems is a popular tourist destination and is particularly flattered by its location: directly on the Danube in the southern Waldviertel and adjacent to the Wachau. You can get here from Vienna in less than an hour by car and the train connections here are also great. Spending a few days discovering the city of Krems and the surrounding area is definitely worth it.

      UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Wachau”
      The Wachau is the approximately 35 km long Danube valley between Emmersdorf and Melk in the west and Stein and Krems in the east. Millions of years ago, the Danube dug through the granite and gneiss plateau of the Bohemian Massif, the geologically oldest part of Austria, and created a breakthrough valley.
      The Wachau was settled very early on. The most famous evidence of this is the statuette of the Venus of Willendorf, which was found during the construction of the Wachau railway in the early 20th century. The so-called “Fanny from Galgenberg” comes from the Krems area. At an impressive age of 36,000 years, it is one of the oldest known Venus figures in the world.
      Thanks to the special climatic conditions, winegrowing developed very early in the Wachau - as well as in and around Krems - and continues to shape the region economically and scenically to this day. The most visible sign of this are the vineyard terraces, which are supported by dry stone walls.
      In 1994, the Wachau was awarded the European Nature Conservation Diploma - one of the most valuable awards for natural and cultural landscapes - and has been renewed several times since then. In the winter of 2000, the time had come: UNESCO added the Wachau, the old town of Krems and the Göttweig and Melk monasteries to the list of World Heritage Sites in the "Cultural Landscape" category.

        Krems an der Donau with its charming old town is located in the Wachau, a 36-kilometer-long valley through which the Danube breaks through. To explore the entire beauty of the city with all its sights, you'll certainly need a whole day on foot. Visit the impressive Steiner Tor, the venerable Dominican Church, the imposing Gozzoburg or the panoramic Donauwarte Krems-Egelsee.

        Krems is also a great starting point for hikes through the vineyards and the Wachau. If you want something more, the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail, the Wachau World Heritage Trail or even the Way of St. James might be something for you.
