The fountain, made of Mannersdorf stone, was created in 1929 by the Viennese sculptor Franz Zelezny to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Simandl Brotherhood, which is said to have existed since 1529.
According to legend, a citizen named Simon Handl lived in Krems who was allegedly particularly badly abused and beaten by his wife, thus becoming the epitome of a Simandl (a housewife; perhaps better understood in Germany under the term "henpecked husband"). Krems women began to compete to see who could better subjugate their husbands.
