The land belonging to the settlement was publicly sold at the end of the 18th century. The ramparts are being leveled. What remains are gently sloping slopes that serve as pasture or fields. Here and there parts of the canals are being filled in. From 1982 onwards, the then association of Belgian Nature and Bird Reserves purchased parts of the city walls. Now the association, which has since been renamed Natuurpunt, already owns or manages more than half.

Thanks to expert management of the reserve, we find a valuable variety of biotopes: open water, floating fields, swamp or swamp forest, reed fields, coppice forest, hay meadows and moist meadows. The whole offers a safe – temporary or otherwise – shelter for numerous plants and animals, in a unique historical context. The management of the reserve is not only aimed at preserving and improving the existing natural values, but also wants to maintain the 17th century walls and restore them where possible
