The Timmelsjoch is undoubtedly one of the most impressive places in the Ötztal: far the rugged mountains open all the way down to the valley and the wind slowly drives the clouds over the peaks. The Timmelsjoch is the highest road in the Alps, and in the summer countless cyclists fight their way up the countless serpentines.

At the top of the Joch is also a small inn, in which both hikers and cyclists can strengthen.

The Timmelsjoch is a border pass between Austria (province of Tyrol) and Italy (province of South Tyrol) and lies at an altitude of 2474 m. Incredibly impressive, repellent-looking landscape. Must see.

If you are in the area, a trip to the Timmelsjoch is recommended. At least when the weather is nice. There is a large parking lot and a small (expensive) guest house.

If you are not afraid of the (nice) effort, it is worth going all the way up from Zwieselstein and then descending again on the South Tyrolean side.
Both sides of the valley are breathtaking. 💫💫

Coming from the smuggler's house, it is a long way up to the Himmelsjoch and after a rest at the two border chairs, it takes a long time to descend back into the Timmelstal. The view from the border back to Austria and onwards to Italy is uplifting.

The yoke is part of the European watershed and the only passable passage on the main Alpine ridge between Reschen and Brenner. It connects the Ötztal with Passeier and separates the Ötztal Alps from the Stubai Alps. Since the Treaty of Saint-Germain came into force in 1920, the border between Italy and Austria has run across the Timmelsjoch. The South Tyrolean parts of the pass belong to the Texel Group Nature Park.
