The Great Schwarzsee (2505 m) is located in a wide rock basin in the Passeier Valley. With a depth of around 30 meters and a diameter of 250 meters, it is one of the deepest and largest mountain lakes in South Tyrol.

Around the lake are the peaks Schwarzwandspitze (3354 m), Botzer (3251 m) and Schneeberger Weißen (2961 m).

The lake is also called Timmeler-Schwarzsee or Timmels-Schwarzsee.
