        In Nienthal there is a reconstruction of a medieval castle complex - the tower hill castle. The location of the buildings in relation to each other on the castle grounds is based on historical models. Three major events take place every year: Viking camp at Pentecost, Medieval Relay in mid-July and Lütjenburg Departure at the beginning of September. There are also various weekend activities, excursions, lectures, markets and much more throughout the year.

                  In the East Holstein landscape there are numerous remains of historical tower hill castles, including the Lütjenburg tower hill castle. Like the Normans and later the Saxons, the landed gentry of the High Middle Ages on the Baltic Sea most often built in this style. The Lütjenburg tower hill castle is a reconstruction of these typical fortifications from the Middle Ages, with great emphasis on historical accuracy. It consists of the motte, a defensive tower surrounded by a moat, and the outer bailey. The materials used, the construction and the buildings themselves are based on authentic historical models. In particular, the excavations of the Kleiner and Großer Schlichtenberg from the 13th century, the bell tower in Niederbrarup and other Holstein buildings from the 15th century served as models for the design of the Lütjenburg tower hill castle.

                  The motte refers to the impressive defensive tower, which is built on a tower hill and surrounded by a moat. Even during the construction phase of the reconstructed Lütjenburg tower hill castle, attention was paid to authenticity. The hill on which the defense tower was ultimately built was, like the medieval models, created from the heaped earth of the dug moat. The builders also adhered to medieval guidelines when choosing building materials. The motte and surrounding buildings were constructed with nails made by the master blacksmith himself; The roofs were covered with 300-year-old tiles and the almost 14 meter high Lütjenburg motte is made entirely of oak.
