The Apostles' Church in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel was built in 1894 according to designs by the architects Erwin von Melle and Peter Gottlob. The church received paintings above the altar by the artist H. Saffer.
The Apostles' Church survived the Second World War unscathed, but a fire destroyed its interior almost completely in September 1977. The reconstruction by architect Bernhard Hirche fundamentally changed the church:
It received a suspended ceiling, creating the church space on the upper floor, while events could be held in the foyer, which includes a kitchen and congregation rooms of various sizes. The sanctuary was relocated inside the church. The altarpieces, designed as film reels, now depict six women and men who have served as modern-day apostles in the 100 years since the church was built.
