The Lower Lock was part of the rafting facilities on the Kirnitzsch.

From around 1600, the water was dammed at the locks and the tree trunks were collected, which were then floated on the flood wave into the valley to the Elbe.

"An information board provides information about the history of rafting. The lock was renovated in 1998 and is protected as a technical monument. There was once even a boat trip here.

During the GDR era, since the 1950s, the Kirnitzsch was used for whitewater trips, with the draining of the locks providing the necessary "flood"." - Hiking and nature guide Saxon Switzerland - Berg- & Naturverlag Rölke

Thankfully, these times are over and you can now enjoy a rich flora and fauna on and in the water on both sides of the lock.
