The excursion to the Hinter Gemstelalpe is worthwhile even if you have already taken a break at one of the other wonderful huts. Up here ends the farm road and above the Alps you have good chances to observe ibex and chamois. Especially in the morning or in spring and autumn, the shy mountain dwellers come down from the steep slopes.

Back Gemstelhütte. From here you can see ibex and chamois in the surrounding mountains.

Would like Stefan28 i.a. just add. Very nice host even set up a telescope for ibex observation, it couldn't be better. Binoculars are not even absolutely necessary. From the hut up, unfortunately, a lot of coarse gravel / stones were piled up on the way, so that you are only sliding on the descent and if you then have a slight meniscus damage ...! We turned around quickly, what a shame. It was even better to walk around the pulpit wall!

Unfortunately, I was on the road so early that I only ate a snack next to the hut and enjoyed the view. The hut was still closed but hey the hut will be opened to give an even better picture of it I'm sure.
In addition, I would be told several times by a hunter named Martin who should be very nice and funny. I think he could be found there.

This alpine pasture used to be called the "Inner" or "Lower" Gemstelalpe. At some point, however, the name changed to the "Hintere". In any case, it is located at the lower, inner and rear end of the Gemsteltal valley. The hiking trail continues there and leads over the "blasted path" to the Upper Gemstelalpe and then further towards the Widdersteinhütte or on the other side to the Sterzer Hütte and Geißhorn.

The rear Gemstelalpe and the innkeepers Sabine and Mathias are cult and a must for every visitor. Mathias can tell you everything about the fauna in the Gemsteltal and Sabine will provide you with delicious cakes and hearty meals.

Here you can take a break with a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains, if there is space. The way to there is rather harmless and easy to do with a stroller and bicycle. It can be full then.

Comfortable retreat, but expensive. 1 cheesecake + 1 pair of gemswurz with cheap bread + 2 drinks for 19 euros and self-service plus 8 euros for 3 hours of parking.

We passed the Gemstelhütte on our way back from our tour via Kemptener Scharte, Mindelheimer Hütte, and Geishorn. Although it was already late and everyone was already cleaning up, we received a very warm welcome and were treated to a delicious apple strudel!
The hut is in a fantastic location!
A perfect end to a very nice day!
