The bastion was built in the 15th century to protect the fishing gate. She received her name from the builder Wenzel Röhrscheidt. Later used as a warehouse, it was expanded as a catering facility in the 19th century. Since 1960 it has been the main building of the Sorbian National Ensemble.

The Röhrscheidt Bastion, Sorbian: Röhrscheidtowa bašta, is part of Bautzen's city fortifications and was built in 1469 to protect the nearby Fisherman's Gate, through which the connection between the main market square and the Spree valley ran. Therefore, it is popularly known and in some books as the Fisherman's Bastion or Bastion at the Fisherman's Gate. The Röhrscheidt Bastion, also known as the Bastion at the Fishermen's Gate or the Lauen Bastion, was built in 1469 to protect the Fishermen's Gate. The name is reminiscent of the master builder Wenzel Röhrscheidt (1510 to 1582). The roof, destroyed by the Swedes in 1639, was renewed in 1676.

The Bastion was handed over to the Bautzen owner of the Mörbitz cloth factory as a wool warehouse in 1850 and transferred to the innkeeper Thiermann along with the forecourt in 1867. From 1870 to 1890, Thiermann built the "Bürgergarten" restaurant and hotel, in which he incorporated the Bastion and the Bürgergarten he had already acquired between the Bastion and the former Lauentor. The Bastion became the headquarters of the "Schlaraffia" social club. After 1945, the Bürgergarten became the Volkshaus and from 1960 it was converted into the main building of the Sorbian National Ensemble. The Bastei was the traditional costume repository of the Sorbian National Ensemble from 1952 to 2015, has been restored and can be used on request.
