The monastery with the monk church dates from the 13th century. After three fires, the last of which burned down completely in 1598, it was never rebuilt. Some parts of the monastery complex were later removed.

The construction of the Franciscan monastery began around 1240 with the monastery church of St. Mary, several buildings and courtyards on the Burglehn - thirty years after the order was recognized by Pope Innocent III (1160/61-1216) and fourteen years after the death of the order's founder, Francis of Assisi (1181/82 to 1226).

In 1401 and 1598 the monastery and church burned down completely and were not rebuilt.

The early Gothic church ruins with pointed arch windows and portal remained. Destitute citizens settled in the ruins of the monastery area and built the simplest houses, the Budenstadt or monks' church settlement. These small houses burned down in 1894.
