The Waldschlößchen Bridge is one of Dresden's most famous Elbe crossings—and not just because of its views. Its construction sparked much controversy in the 1990s and even led to the Dresden Elbe Valley losing its UNESCO World Heritage status. Today, it connects the city's districts and offers sweeping views over the Elbe meadows and toward the Old Town.

This is the first time a cultural center in the world has lost the coveted seal of approval from the UN cultural organization. According to Unesco, the building will irreversibly cut the Elbe Valley and destroy the cultural landscape with its flood plains. A tunnel would have the committee last accepted as a compromise.
